Introduction of members

Agenda Items:
Public Outreach
Student Incentives During Testing
Safe and Civil Schools

Public Outreach:
• SCOTT LOCKWOOD mentioned the following ideas:
-Ken Marushige developed flyer for parents.
-Discussion around using RMS website as a tool to recruit parents following a few modifications (ex: tab for perspective families)
-Bring former families & students to future meetings at K-5 magnet schools
-Tonight’s meeting with Dr. Garcia will focus on outreach and next steps
• DR. GARCIA: There are 1500 students within our boundries, but only a mere 500 enrolled at RMS. She feels we need to aggressively go after the high achieving, high performing students to make our school more of a competitor among other higher performing schools.
• SCOTT LOCKWOOD and next steps:
-Ken’s video that was shared w/ staff
-Distribute postcard to staff as a resource to make teachers more aware of what RMS has to offer
-Post card to be mailed out to all elementary schools in district in an attempt to recruit students
• ARLENE SPANIOL: There will be web site improvements: outside company & in-house (Ken to handle).
• BEV RAMBICURE: PD idea – website design so teachers and/or teams can design own websites
• STACY NORTH: Concerned with “false advertising” to students who do not "qualify" for extracurricular activities mentioned on post card. She wants to make sure that intervention/enrichment programs are also highlighted for these particular students. Remind Ken to list Read 180 as an “enrichment” program on the post card in an attempt to attract the average Joe, as well as the more high-performing students.

Student Incentives During Testing:
• DEBBIE CHRISTENSEN donated 2 IPOD shuffles for a raffle
• SCOTT LOCKWOOD suggests we plan now, ahead of time, for incentives for kids
• DR. GARCIA confirmed that school purchased pencils and other miscellaneous items and would pitch effort to PTO to help out in this endeavor

Safe and Civil Schools:
• JENNIFER JAY - possible cafeteria discipline plan
• STACY NORTH - lunch time is more calm(less fights) but more name calling this year
• DEB – much more name-calling apparent
• DR. GARCIA – ATL to discuss character education at their next meeting (Wed., 12/10); Safe & Civil schools contract approved for 7th & 8th grade
• DEB CHRISTENSEN – how to bring character education down to 6th grade because they don’t have ATL
• TRISHA CHUNG – working with 7th grade; 6th grade is on her agenda
• HILARY HAGER – anti-bullying class for 6th graders – part of rotation???

Roundtable:
• FRAN DONOVAN is concerned with students with multiple F’s and D’s in world languages – how to motivate in language classes for kids who are flunking other core classes? Why press the issue of language standards when students aren’t passing multiple core subjects? Not every student in school has to be in the IB program in order for the school to have the IB designation. If we want kids to succeed in core classes, and they don’t have the opportunities at home, then we have to lessen what we throw at them. Supporting basic needs of children vs. nurturing the “whole” child.
• DR. GARCIA respectfully disagrees in that students who are failing and are receiving interventions should therefore receive the benefit of world languages.
• JENNIFER JAY wondered if we could have informal content specific homework tutoring after school
• SCOTT LOCKWOOD says the critical piece/message that teachers need to relay to students is that: "If it’s not perfect, just turn it in. Anything is better than a zero."
-To discuss at next Department meeting: (1) standardized grading policies within disciplines (2) what does proficiency look like within disciplines
-Report results back to staff meeting
-To be discussed among ILT
• DEB CHRISTENSEN - 6th grade camp January 20th
• SCOTT LOCKWOOD confirms that 6th, 7th, & 8th grade has been reconfigured to meet QEIA class size reduction.
• EMMA EHRLICH reminded members of agenda items for next Department meeting: standardized grading policies & proficiency across classes
• BEV RAMBICURE is concerned with PD and meeting the needs of coaches; 6th grade with 8th grade in PE locker rooms (28 8th graders with 6th grade) is also a huge concern. 6th & 8th grades now separated during activities. Carlos & Vicente to provide additional supervision in boy’s locker room. Bev states that this situation creates an unsafe atmosphere for 6th graders. One possible PD – Job Core to help non-college bound 8th graders. Volleyball team going ice skating at Horton Plaza on Thurs 12/18.
• ALLISON BROWN begins with EDRP news. Alma will have called all no-shows by winter break. Wants to get in contact with all families of FBB/BB students. Make final EDRP class decisions by January. Primetime annual events: Junior Theater event on Monday 12/15. Wed 12/17 is annual winter concert. Oppt’y for PTO to disseminate info for families.
• DR. GARCIA says that there will be a new parent room in 207. New loaner room in counseling with Diana. Counseling retreat next week to restructure.
• JENNIFER JAY – GATE Seminar symposium on Friday 12/19-unveiling topic of Utopia. Arlene will help students with researching skills. GATE trip fundraising has begun for NY & Washington.
• STACY NORTH relays for math team that math intervention okay with changes. Read 180 still need computers – flow of class not positive – smaller classes for read 180. Need new ideas for next year.
• FRAN DONOVAN is willing to administer placement test for 6th graders. Suggests another intermediate/advanced Spanish class for kids is needed before allowing them to move onto a Speaker’s class.
• LUCINDA BERNARDINO feels her time and efforts are better served on the master committee so that her EL kids can be represented.
• TRISHA CHUNG agrees with Lucinda so as to alleviate late changes in master schedule. Academic review with 7th & 8th graders is underway. Counselors are meeting with all 7th & 8th graders via parent assemblies and through to ATL classes.

Meeting adjourned at 2:27 pm.
Next SGT meeting January 20th at 2:00.
Next Tuesday 12/16 is Staff luncheon.
